This biweekly program is designed to engage young children and accompanying adults in the wonderful world of gardening. Each class builds upon the last and will be centered on what’s growing and ready to harvest! Adults are asked to actively participate with children during the program. Good Garden Talks: Weed & Water Management

Join us in collaboration with Let’s Grow Akron and OSU Extension to learn weed management and proper watering techniques for your vegetable garden. The program will be canceled in the event of inclement weather. 

Summer Census Bird Walk

It’s the opening day of the Summer Breeding Bird Census! Join a naturalist and counter from the Greater Akron Audubon Society to discover the benefits of community science and discover which species are nesting in Summit County this summer. Binoculars recommended.

Bank Swallow Stroll

Take a short stroll with a naturalist to learn all about bank swallows! We will get a glimpse of their annual nesting colony, providing an up-close opportunity to experience the beauty of nature, flight and new life.

Celebrate Pride Month with a birding walk on the 1.2-mile Pheasant Run Trail. Birder or not, queer or ally, doesn’t matter — all are welcome! Join us for a fun and informative walk then stick around to socialize and enjoy some snacks at Sherman Shelter.

Fossils for Kids

Kids and their adult companions can join a naturalist while exploring the stream to hunt for fossils and learn about the ancient creatures that once called this park home. Dress to get wet; closed-toe shoes required.

Children ages 3 to 6 and their adult companions will learn about black bears, beloved animals native to Ohio. A craft and game are part of the program. Please make other arrangements for younger children unable to remain in infant seats or strollers. Registration is required and begins on 6/5.

Learn about the musical talents of our local frogs and craft your own simple instruments out of recycled materials to join in the amphibious chorus. Meet at Pioneer Shelter. Registration is required and begins on 6/4.

Come try your hand at fishing. We’ll provide the rods and bait, so all you have to do is show up! Ages 16 and over will need a valid Ohio fishing license.

Join a naturalist as we explore the world of ladybugs. Did you know these beetles are fierce predators? Ohio is home to 14 species and North America has 450. Learn which species are native and which have been introduced, then take a short hike around the nature center to search for these fascinating and colorful insects.
