Starting at the Portage Hike & Bike Trail in Kent, this multipurpose trail – on land owned by METRO Regional Transit Authority – follows an unused railroad corridor.

Phase II construction will begin in 2013 and continue west into Akron. Eventually, it will connect to the Towpath Trail via a linkage at the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad's Northside Station in downtown Akron. Another section may link to the 34-mile Bike & Hike Trail in Munroe Falls.

The Freedom Trail travels 4.2 miles between the Middlebury Lot to Tallmadge Circle. When completed, this eight-mile multipurpose trail will connect Akron and Kent and become another popular linear park managed by Metro Parks, Serving Summit County.
