Did you know that most Summit Metro Parks loop trails are marked for one-way travel?
To assist with social distancing, the park district is currently encouraging one-way travel, especially on trails with boardwalks and narrow sections. While additional signage has been installed to assist hikers during the COVID-19 public health emergency, many SMP trails are already designed for travel in one direction by following the existing trail markers. Check out the video below for general wayfinding tips, then read on for guidance on one-way travel on Summit Metro Parks trails.
In addition to the information Becca shared on finding your way in the Metro Parks, here are some tips for one-way travel:
Stop by the kiosk and check the trailhead sign.
Before setting off on your hike, orient yourself using the park map located in the kiosk and take a moment to take note of the trailhead signage (pictured below). At parks with multiple trails, the arrows next to each trail name indicate the direction of travel. To provide additional assistance, many trails also have a black and yellow “One-Way Travel” sign (like the one pictured at the top of this post).

Check the trail markers.
Once out on the trail, you may find yourself wondering if you are correctly traveling the one-way direction, and there is an easy way to check! Trail markers like the one pictured below display the trail icon only on the side hikers see when traveling in the intended direction:

When traveling the opposite direction on a loop trail, hikers will see the back of the trail marker post, which does not have the trail icon:

Additional COVID-19 safety tips include:
- Think First: Stay home if you are sick or have symptoms.
- Wash Hands: Wash your hands before coming to the park, carry hand sanitizer and try to avoid high-touch areas.
- Keep Your Distance: Maintain 6 feet between yourself and others and give warning before passing on the trail. Follow directional signage.
- Come Prepared: Bring your own drinking water, as well as a mask for situations where you may not be able to maintain six feet of distance.
- Respect Closures: Some amenities may be closed for public safety. Please bypass busy areas for quieter ones — it’s a great time to check out a new park.
- Stay in Touch: The situation changes rapidly. Summit Metro Parks is implementing dynamic closures and updating our website and social media with the latest information.
