Summit Metro Parks (SMP) Naturalist Joe Malmisur has received the Outstanding Part-Time/Seasonal Interpreter Award from the National Association for Interpretation (NAI). This award recognizes an NAI member who demonstrates leadership skills or potential, creativity in programming development or projects, and a commitment to the profession and NAI.

“Joe is a gifted interpreter, a compassionate educator, a dedicated teammate and a lifelong learner,” said Community Engagement Manager Victoria Putnam. “One of his greatest strengths is his ability to build genuine connections — with partner organizations, community members and colleagues. His collaborative and enthusiastic spirit strengthens our internal culture and expands the reach and impact of our work.”

Among his numerous achievements, Malmisur has been a driving force behind some of the park district’s most successful and enduring programs, including Maple Mania, Wild Back Yards and Vital Nature Connections. Drawing on his background as a science teacher, special education teacher, high school principal, dairy farmer, florist and arborist, Malmisur brings a unique and diverse perspective to his role as a naturalist. He specializes in SMP programs and events focused on topics like mycology, geology, botany, herpetology, entomology and astronomy.

The National Association for Interpretation (NAI) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit professional organization dedicated to advancing the profession of heritage interpretation, currently serving about 6,500 members in the United States and over thirty other nations. Individual members include those who work at parks, museums, nature centers, zoos, botanical gardens, aquariums, historical and cultural sites, commercial tour companies and theme parks.
