Summit Metro Parks has named Joshua Hamblen as its chief of rangers. With over 10 years of service with the park district, Hamblen will now lead the ranger department’s efforts to enforce the park district’s rules, regulations and other applicable laws to protect resources and achieve visitor safety.

Hamblen joined Summit Metro Parks in 2014 as a park ranger. He was promoted to sergeant in 2017, then lieutenant in 2021. As lieutenant, he served as lead department investigator for federal, statewide and local investigations, ensured compliance for multiple departmental certifications, and was liaison to local law enforcement and courts. He is a 2025 recipient of the FBI’s Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (LEEDA) Trilogy Award. Most recently, Hamblen served briefly as captain in April 2025 before his appointment as chief in June.

“I am honored to lead the Summit Metro Parks ranger department and look forward to continuing our mission of protecting and serving our community so they have a safe and enjoyable park experience,” said Hamblen. “It is a privilege to lead an outstanding staff, and I am profoundly grateful for their hard work and commitment. I look forward to guiding our department to its full potential and ensuring our park visitors feel safe and confident that our ranger department continues to serve with tact, diplomacy, discretion and impartiality.”

Hamblen has a Bachelor’s degree in environmental science (Allegheny College) and a master’s degree in public administration (Kent State University). He is a resident of Wadsworth, Ohio, where he lives with his wife and four children. He is an avid runner (he recently completed the Cleveland Marathon) and enjoys riding his motorcycle in his leisure time.
