The Brushwood Area at Furnace Run is named for the family of inventor Charles Francis Brush, who developed an electric arc lighting system in the 1870s.

Akron's Oatmeal King
Ferdinand Schumacher, who is credited with introducing oatmeal to America, owned a part of Deep Lock Quarry. His company, American Cereal Works, later became Quaker Oats.
